1st Pinelands scouts take the cake

Scouting in Pinelands has a strong history, with many awards and trophies over the years.  A team from 1st Pinelands even won an international hiking competition, held in Switzerland in the late 80s, but it has been some time since this troop  brought home a trophy.

The Upton Shield, a junior scout hiking competition, attracts teams from all over the province and is an annual highlight for scouts aged from 12 to 14 years old.  This year 53 teams from all over the Province participated in a traverse from Kalk Bay to Muizenberg on 1 May 2011. Both the Pinelands troops did very well with 3rd Pinelands achieving a joint second place and 1st Pinelands grabbing first place by 16 points. The winning team was Kailen Naidoo, Johann Harzon and Josiah Senior. led by Laura Troost.

After a drought of eleven years, the troop may be building future glories with a sixth place in the Gordon’s Shield, a third place in the Rayner Trophy, and now five-times winner of the Upton Shield. The troop also produced a Springbok Scout last year and has five members attending the World Jamboree in Sweden in July this year.

When asked for comment Wolf, the Troop Scouter, said it was thanks to the training offered by diligent and active adult Scouters and strong patrol leadership by the older scouts.

We are very proud of all our teams and intend scouting in Pinelands to grow from strength to strength as more young people join the ranks. The troop is now open to applicants born in 2000. Younger boys and girls (birthdates 2001 to 2003) can join the pack now and move to scouts when they turn eleven.

Yours in Scouting
