1st Pinelands Scouts :: After Rayner 2010

After Rayner 2010

Attikus - 08th March 2010

Oompie and I went on Rayner Trophy this weekend (6th-7th Feb) we joined up with two scouts from 1st Durbanville. We hiked about 38kms altogether and the temperatures were in the high 30s. On the first day we hiked from Suikerbossie over the 12 Apostles up to the scout hut, down kasteelspoort and along the pipe track to Lion's Head. Then we went halfway up Lion's Head and then down againa dn along Signal Hill Rd to Appleton.

We arrived at Appleton at 1 in the morning and the we cooked supper had cold showers and had a well deserved sleep. For about two hours that is, when we woke up we made breakfast of pancakes, we cleaned up our site and then headed off to the bottom of Signal Hill Rd down Kloof Neck rd into town. We went around town on a kind of treasure hunt and then visited St George's Cathedral and then the "Fort where it all began" the Castle. We were given train tickets and all left together on the train to Lakeside. From the station we hiked up to Boys Drive and then instead of Hiking up to St James Peak and Muizenberg Peak we decided to hike down to the Sea Scout Base.

At the Sea Scout Base they sent us to Muizenberg Beach where we waited for the other teams. They took a really long time to come down so they sent us all back to the Sea Scout Base again. We had closing parade and we came 10th. Which considering all the circumstances was really good. The bases that we did do we did well and if we hadn't missed so many bases we would have done much better.

It was a very good learning experience and I had a lot of fun as well. Thanks go to Oompie for putting up with me as PL and huge thanks must go to the scouters who helped us train for Rayner the Lion's Head hikes really paid off.
